Rina is a tall cylinder of hand-woven rattan under a wide, shallow linen shade. The weave is done by hand, which means the vertical ribbing never runs quite perfectly straight — and that is the point. Against a plastered wall or a walnut nightstand it reads as something made rather than manufactured, which is what wabi-sabi is actually about.

The linen shade is unlined, so light passes through the fabric as well as out of the top and bottom — a soft, low, 3000K glow with no glare in it. It is the kind of light you want at the end of the day rather than the start of one, which is why it belongs on a bedside table, a console behind a sofa, or a desk you read at more than you work at.

The base is woven by hand from natural cane, so every lamp has its own grain and its own small irregularities in the ribbing.

Unlined linen shade

Natural linen diffuses the light evenly and warms it slightly, giving a soft glow rather than a bright pool with a hard edge.

Getting started

Rina arrives assembled apart from the shade, which seats onto the harness and is held by a single finial. Fit the bulb first, then the shade, then hand-tighten the finial — no tools. To keep the rattan looking right, dust it with a dry soft brush along the weave rather than across it, and keep it out of direct sun, which will lighten natural cane over time.

Questions

Does light come through the rattan base?

No — the bulb sits above the base, inside the shade, so the rattan is structure rather than a diffuser. All of the light comes from the linen shade and from the openings at its top and bottom.

Can I use a dimmable bulb?

Yes. Fit a dimmable warm-white bulb and either a plug-in dimmer or a switched-and-dimmed outlet. Dimmed, the linen goes a deeper amber, which is when the lamp is at its best.

Rattan is a natural material, hand-woven. Variation in tone, weave spacing and exact dimensions between individual lamps is normal and is not a defect.
