Sora is a wabi-sabi table lamp reduced to two honest materials: a solid wood base in a warm walnut finish, and a natural linen drum shade sitting quietly above it. Nothing is lacquered to a mirror, nothing is chromed. The grain runs where the grain runs and the weave of the linen stays visible — the japandi idea that a thing is more beautiful when you can still read what it is made of.

Lit, the linen turns the bulb into a soft wash rather than a point of light, and the walnut underneath warms up with it. Getting started

Sora goes together in a minute. Stand the base where you want it, seat the linen shade onto the harness and hand-tighten the finial until it sits level. Fit a warm-white bulb and plug it in. Dust the linen with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum on low; wipe the wood with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep solvents away from the finish so the grain keeps its warmth.

What bulb should I use?

A standard E26 screw bulb. Go warm — around 2700K — to bring out the walnut grain and the natural tone of the linen, and choose a dimmable LED if you want to take it right down in the evening.

Wood and linen are natural materials, which is why the grain pattern, the depth of the walnut tone and the weave of the shade will be a little different on every lamp.
