Terra is a heavy ovoid ceramic body under a wide, flat fabric shade. The glaze is reactive — rust, ochre and chalky cream pooling and running into each other in the kiln — so what comes out is closer to a piece of pottery someone made than to a lamp base someone specified. No two are alike, and the ones with the most movement in the glaze are the ones you would pick up first.
The shade is deliberately low and wide, which pushes the light down and out rather than up at the ceiling. That makes it a good lamp to read by and a better one to sit near — a warm, contained pool of light on a nightstand or a sideboard, with the glazed body catching whatever spills onto it.

Terra assembles in a couple of minutes — seat the shade onto the harness and hand-tighten the finial, with the bulb already fitted. The ceramic body is heavy by design and does not need weighting, but lift it by the body rather than the neck when you move it. Wipe the glaze with a barely damp cloth; skip abrasives and anything solvent-based, which will dull the surface.
Ceramic is fired individually. Variation in glaze pattern, colour depth, surface sheen and dimensions of a centimetre or two between pieces is normal and is not a defect.
